Power of Showing Interest

We all probably know someone who prefers to talk only of themselves. How boring. It may be difficult to admit, but none of us is as interesting as we think we are.

One of the most powerful and graceful things we can do is show interest in someone else. Is it too much to ask someone how they are doing today, what they do for a living, or how they accomplished what they did? The good news is that this communication technique can be learned. And when it is learned, it becomes an important asset and skill.

A sincere interest in someone else empowers and builds value in the person of whom we are showing interest. It also empowers the person asking, and is an important rapport-building gesture. Proof of our mastery of this genuine communication skill lies in our meaningful follow up questions where we are truly listening.
